About this opportunity

MIT's month-long programming competition, where your team writes an autonomous player that controls a robot army in a real-time strategy game and battles other teams' code. Lectures in the first two weeks of January are streamed on YouTube, and players can be written in Java or Python. Teams made up entirely of high school students have their own High School tournament and prizes, within a season prize pool of more than $20,000.

Who can apply

Anyone can write a bot, form a team and play scrimmages. The High School tournament is for teams made up entirely of high school students; the main qualifiers are for college students.

How to apply

Register a team at play.battlecode.org when the season opens. The game software and rules are released in early January and tournaments run through the month; the 2026 season ran 5 to 31 January. 2027 dates not yet announced.
